When it looks like your writing is gone, start here

Take a breath. ๐Ÿซ
ObsiKO does not quietly throw away what you wrote. Most of the situations below aren't "gone" โ€” they're "somewhere else."
Find the case closest to yours and follow it step by step.

๐Ÿ—‘๏ธ I deleted a note by mistake

It's almost certainly still in the trash. ObsiKO doesn't erase files outright โ€” it moves them to a trash folder inside your vault.

  1. Open Trash from the right side panel (or type trash in the command palette).
  2. Find the file in the list and press Restore. It goes back where it was.

โณ If you turned on auto-empty trash, files past the deadline may already be gone (check Settings โ–ธ Convenience). Consider a generous window โ€” or leaving it off.

โ†ฉ๏ธ What I just wrote disappeared / reverted

Try โŒ˜Z (Ctrl+Z) first. Most in-editor mishaps end right here.

If undo doesn't bring it back, open Version history. ObsiKO keeps earlier snapshots of each note when it saves (at most once a minute per note, the latest 80 per note).

  1. Click โœ“ Saved in the status bar at the bottom, or right-click the note in the file tree (โ‹ฏ at the right of the row on phones and tablets) โ–ธ Version historyโ€ฆ. (The clock button in the Vault Log panel header and Version history in the command palette (โŒ˜P) open it too.)
  2. Step back through time and click an entry โ€” it's shown compared with now, with lines removed since in red and lines added in green (Whole version shows the full text from then). Press Restore this version at the point you want.

๐Ÿ’ก Restoring keeps your current text as a new version too. If you don't like the result, you can jump right back to the latest point.

โš ๏ธ Version history lives only on this device. Versions written on another device aren't here, and on the web it's wiped along with everything else when you press App data in this browser โ–ธ Clear all in Settings.

๐Ÿค– The AI changed my note

When AI edits files, ObsiKO records it as one run you can undo as a whole.

  1. Open the AI change history panel in the right sidebar.
  2. Expand the run โ€” it shows exactly what changed in each file, line by line.
  3. Revert one file or the entire run.

๐Ÿ’พ It says "Failed to save"

When a save fails, ObsiKO does not clear your editor. What you just wrote is still on screen.

  1. Make a safety copy first. Select all (โŒ˜A) and copy (โŒ˜C) โ€” now it can't be lost no matter what.
  2. Check the usual causes:
    • The vault folder was moved or renamed โ†’ pick it again with Open Folder
    • The cloud hasn't downloaded that file yet โ†’ wait a moment and retry (while online)
    • Out of storage / no write permission for that folder
  3. If it still fails, use Export to save the current text somewhere else.

โ˜๏ธ It says my edits conflict with another device

When several devices share one cloud folder, the same note can be edited on both sides. A small banner appears at the top.

โœจ Try [Merge] first. "Keep mine" and "Take theirs" both mean throwing one side's work away. Merge keeps everything from parts you edited in different places, and only asks about the spots you changed differently.

๐Ÿ”„ I turned on GitHub sync and notes seem to be gone

First, relax โ€” ObsiKO stops before it deletes.

  • A brief failure to read GitHub is never read as โ€œthe other device deleted everythingโ€. If it cannot read, it deletes nothing and simply stops.
  • If several files are about to go, a card appears in Settings โ–ธ Sync between devices. Choose โ€œKeep both, delete nothingโ€ and nothing is removed (automatic syncing rests until you choose).
  • If a note still seems missing, check the trash first. When sync deletes, it only ever moves files to the trash. โ†’ Trash
  • If the same line was edited differently on both sides, yours stays and theirs is kept as a copy next to it โ€” it isn't gone, it's beside it.

๐Ÿ“‚ My vault won't open / it asks for the folder every launch

  • Did you move or rename the folder? The remembered location no longer matches. Pick it once with Open Folder and it'll stick again.
  • On iPhone/iPad with a cloud folder, the cloud may not have the folder ready yet. Wait a moment and relaunch.
  • Some browsers don't allow folder access at all. There, files live inside the browser โ€” finish writing and then use Export to save them where you want.

โ˜๏ธ A file shows a cloud icon (โ˜๏ธ) and looks empty

The cloud (iCloud and friends) has temporarily offloaded the file's contents to save space. The file itself is fine.

  • Just open it โ€” it downloads again automatically. (You need to be online.)
  • To fetch everything ahead of time: Settings โ–ธ Convenience โ–ธ Download entire vault.
  • To keep it that way: turn on Keep downloaded in the same place.

๐Ÿ”ด I pressed the Control Center / lock screen record button and nothing happened (iPhone)

  • First, check that you have opened ObsiKO once and allowed the microphone. The lock screen cannot show a permission prompt.
  • If Settings โ–ธ ObsiKO โ–ธ Live Activities is off on your iPhone, recording will not start.
  • Still nothing? Open ObsiKO's Settings โ–ธ About โ–ธ โ€œControl Center recording logโ€. It shows the last state the control left behind, so you can see where it stopped.

๐Ÿ“ฑ The app restarted by itself on my phone/tablet

The device ran low on memory and only the screen was rebuilt. Your writing was already autosaved.

  • It's most likely on a big mind map with lots of drawing, or many very large photos. Splitting a heavy canvas into files helps.
  • On relaunch, your tabs and even your cursor position come back.

โŒจ๏ธ Korean input drops characters / the cursor jumps

This is the part ObsiKO works hardest on, so please tell us if it happens.

  • First, quit and relaunch the app completely. That clears most cases.
  • If it only happens in one note, note which line (inside a table? a formula? next to a highlight?).
  • A diagnostic record makes it much faster to fix ๐Ÿ”ฌ: with a note open, run Start IME diagnostics from the command palette (โŒ˜P), then type the way that caused the trouble. As soon as it happens, run Save IME diagnostics and an ime-trace-โ€ฆ.md file appears in your vault's _ObsiKO folder. The note text itself isn't included, so feel free to attach it to your email.
  • Then email support@obsiko.com with your device and keyboard. If we can reproduce it, we can fix it.

๐Ÿ—„๏ธ Getting files back from the automatic backup (desktop)

Once a day, the desktop app zips your vault's text files (notes, mind maps, bases) into the app data folder, outside the vault. It's on from the start โ€” your last safety net if you lose the whole vault folder.

  1. Run Open backup folder from the command palette (โŒ˜P) to open the folder where backups collect.
  2. Unzip the one with the right date and take out the files you need.
  • To keep a copy of how things are right now, run Back up now (zip outside vault).
  • The latest 8 are kept, and attachments like photos and videos aren't included. Turn it on or off in Settings โ–ธ Saving โ–ธ Auto backup (daily).

๐Ÿงฏ When nothing works โ€” protect the text first

Whatever the cause, not losing what you wrote comes first. In this order:

  1. Select all (โŒ˜A) โ†’ copy (โŒ˜C) โ†’ paste anywhere (notes app, an email draftโ€ฆ)
  2. Export to PDF, HTML, or a ZIP of the originals
  3. Then go looking for the cause
